If you’re dreaming of a Mission Hills Country Club wedding, there are few themes that feel more naturally at home in this iconic Kansas City venue than a Kentucky Derby inspired celebration.
With its manicured golf course views, classic architecture, and timeless country club atmosphere, Mission Hills Country Club provides the perfect backdrop for a wedding that feels elegant, celebratory, and effortlessly chic. When I imagined designing a wedding here, I leaned into the romance and tradition of Derby culture while keeping the aesthetic refined.
The result? A garden party meets Southern sophistication wedding design that is as elevated as it is joyful.
Located in the heart of Mission Hills, Kansas, Mission Hills Country club is one of the most beautiful and classic wedding venues in the Kansas City area.
Couples love it for its:
• Sweeping Golf Course Views
• Timeless white clubhouse architecture
• Elegant indoor reception spaces
• Picturesque outdoor ceremony options
It’s a venue that naturally lends itself to classic, polished weddings, but it also has incredible potential for couples who want to incorporate personality and playful details.
That’s exactly what inspired this Kentucky Derby wedding design concept.
The Kentucky Derby is known for its celebratory elegance. Think floral dresses, champagne toasts, beautiful hats, and vibrant Springtime colors.
For this Mission Hills wedding concept, the design pulls inspiration from:
• Southern garden parties
• Classic horse racing culture
• English countryside style
• Spring florals in soft romantic tones
Instead of leaning overly thematic, the goal was to create something that feels refined and timeless while still playful and memorable.
Imagine guests arriving at Mission Hills Country Club and walking toward a sailcloth tent ceremony overlooking the course. Soft blush flags flutter at the top of the tent, embroidered with the couple’s monogram, adding a personalized and whimsical touch.
Guests are seated on natural cane back chairs, surrounding tables dressed in patterned sage linens that feel both fresh and classic.
The ceremony florals feature garden roses, ranunculus, peonies, and delicate wildflowers, creating an arrangement that feels organic and romantic rather than overly structured.
For cocktail hour, the atmosphere becomes lively and celebratory, just like Derby Day. Guests sip mint juleps in silver cups while mingling around floral-covered cocktail tables. A vintage inspired bar cart filled with wine and champagne adds charm and visual interest.
To lean into the horse racing theme in a playful way, guests could also interact with:
• a race ribbon seating chart
• signature Derby cocktails
• a hat moment for photos
• live jazz or bluegrass music
These elements create an experience that feels immersive but still sophisticated.
The reception design is where this concept really shines. Tables are layered with sage patterned linens, rattan chargers, and delicate china that feels reminiscent of an English garden luncheon. Blush flatware adds a soft romantic touch while green stemware ties the palette together. Florals spill naturally across the tables in lush arrangements featuring:
• peach garden roses
• pink peonies
• ranunculus
• delicate greenery
The overall effect feels light, joyful, and refined, not overly formal.
One of the most fun aspects of a Kentucky Derby wedding is incorporating unexpected details that feel playful but elegant. Some of my favorite moments from this concept include:
• race ribbon escort displays
• sculptural horse accents in floral installations
• embroidered cocktail napkins
• personalized Derby cups for drinks
These details create opportunities for guests to interact with the design – something I always strive for when planning weddings.
Mission Hills Country Club already carries a sense of heritage, tradition, and timeless elegance. By incorporating Derby inspired elements, the design enhances those qualities instead of competing with them. The overall feeling is celebratory but refined. The decor is colorful yet elevated, it’s thematic without being kitschy. In other words, exactly the kind of wedding that feels memorable and timeless.
If you’re planning a Mission Hills Country Club wedding in Kansas City, the possibilities for design are truly endless.
